Building a successful pyrolysis project

The most successful pyrolysis projects combine suitable feedstock with access to a nearby heat customer.

Feedstock quality directly influences both carbon removal potential and energy production. Key feedstock characteristics include:

  • High carbon content increases carbon removal potential
  • High heating value increases potential energy output
  • Low moisture content reduces pre-processing requirements and increases flexibility in energy integration
  • Low abrasive particle content reduces equipment wear and operating costs

Energy offtake is equally important. Around half of the energy contained in the feedstock is converted into pyrolysis gas, making access to a nearby heat customer a key contributor to project economics.
