Project goal: Demonstrate the scalability of pyrolysis-based carbon removal by constructing and operating a 20 MW industrial-scale plant in Vrå, Denmark. The plant converts agricultural residues into biochar, gas, and biooil, showcasing how the technology can enable large-scale carbon removal and renewable energy production.
Project timeline: 2022-2025
Approach: The project scales the SkyClean pyrolysis system to industrial levels, ten times larger than previous pilot plants. Processing 40,000 tons of biogas residual fibres annually, the plant produces 14,000 tons of biochar and substantial volumes of green gas. The project also investigates syngas upgrading for advanced biofuels, as well as optimal biochar handling, distribution, and agricultural application through laboratory and field studies.
Expected results: SkyClean Scale-up is expected to validate the commercial and technical viability of large-scale pyrolysis for carbon removal. The plant will contribute to reducing agricultural CO₂ emissions while generating valuable data on biochar stability and soil benefits.
SkyClean’s contribution: Stiesdal SkyClean leads the development and demonstration of the pyrolysis technology and is responsible for the construction and operation of the 20 MW full-scale pyrolysis plant in Vrå.
