Project goal: Demonstrate the potential of using biochar in building materials, specifically in lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) and wood-based particle boards (WPBs), without compromising durability, strength, or fire resistance.
Project timeline: 2023-2025
Approach: The project investigates the influence of biochar characteristics such as chemical composition, particle size, and morphology through parametric laboratory experiments. Different biochar products are tested in LWAC and WPB samples, while pre-processing techniques like crushing, milling, and sieving are evaluated. Life cycle assessment (LCA) quantifies the environmental benefits of substituting conventional materials with biochar.
Expected results: The project is expected to show that biochar can reduce the CO₂ footprint of the building sector significantly, improve indoor air quality, and conserve natural resources. Substituting 10-20% of raw materials with biochar could create large-scale market demand in the EU and accelerate the biochar industry’s growth. The project will help position Denmark among the frontrunners in developing low-carbon building solutions.
