Project goal: Assess the potential of biochar to reduce emissions in Danish agriculture by improving carbon stability, soil quality, and overall climate effects.
Project timeline: 2022-2026
Approach: The project produces biochar from Danish feedstocks, monitors emissions and energy balances, and tests biochar stability in soils and field trials. Focus areas include carbon storage, soil hydraulic properties, crop resilience, and impacts on groundwater. Legal and governance aspects are also evaluated.
Expected results: By establishing key biochar qualities for agricultural use, the project supports large-scale implementation in Denmark, strengthens the pyrolysis industry, and contributes to the national target of reducing 2 million tons CO₂e by 2030.
