Project goal: Optimise biochar production for long-term carbon storage in soil by applying advanced geological analysis techniques to better determine and improve biochar stability.
Project timeline: 2024-2026
Approach: The project combines organic petrography, geochemistry, and thermodynamic modelling with comparative studies of naturally preserved chars to define the characteristics of permanent biochar. Farmers are engaged through surveys and stakeholder meetings to evaluate knowledge, acceptance, and willingness to adopt biochar.
Expected results: The project is expected to deliver a more precise and cost-effective method for assessing biochar stability, strengthen the basis for large-scale carbon storage, and support wider adoption by farmers.
