Project goal: Advance and demonstrate pyrolysis-based carbon removal technology that converts agricultural and forestry residues into biochar, biooil, and gas.
Project timeline: 2021-2026
Approach: The project develops, tests, and optimises the SkyClean system through pilot and demonstration plants at DTU (0.2 MW) and GreenLab (2 MW), resulting in knowledge about optimal plant design and performance. Testing of catalytic biooil upgrading and the potential for syngas conversion to biomethane are also in scope of the project.
Expected results: SkyClean 2 MW is expected to achieve Technology Readiness Level 7 and deliver a validated design for a commercial-scale plant.
SkyClean’s contribution: Stiesdal SkyClean contributed by developing and demonstrating the pyrolysis technology later used as the foundation of a 20 MW pyrolysis plant inaugurated in Vrå in 2024.
Partners: Dansk Gasteknisk Center a/s, Technical University of Denmark, Topsoe A/S, Ørsted Bioenergy & Thermal Power A/S, Energy Cluster Denmark.
Funding: Funded by EUDP.
