Project goal: Develop sustainable supply and value chains by combining emission-reducing practices and biochar solutions to produce zero-emission oats and ryebread.
Project timeline: 2023-2025
Approach: The project conducts a full life cycle analysis to map emissions from the entire value chain of oats and ryebread. In primary production, emissions are reduced by using green ammonia to fertilise rye and oats and by applying nitrification inhibitors to lower nitrous oxide emissions during fertilisation. Post-harvest straws are converted into biochar, which is then returned to the soil to ensure long-term carbon storage.
Expected results: Knowledge about life cycle impacts of oats and ryebread and testing methods that reduce emissions associated with food production.
SkyClean’s contribution: Transforming harvested oat and rye straw into biochar and returning the biochar to the soil.
