Project goal: Explore the potential of biochar to mitigate the climate impacts of crop production.
Project timeline: 2022-2026
Approach: The project produces biochar pellets from straw-digestate mixtures, evaluates their energy balance, and tests their stability and effects on soil in field trials, including impacts on N₂O emissions. Farmer surveys and regulatory analyses assess barriers and incentives for wider implementation.
Expected results: The project is expected to generate knowledge on biochar production and optimisation, identify incentives and barriers for large-scale adoption, and support reductions in Danish agricultural emissions by up to 38% by 2030. It may also open export opportunities for pyrolysis technology and biochar applications.
SkyClean’s contribution: Producing biochar from straw and biogas digestate fibres at different temperatures to evaluate stability and soil performance.
