Biotumen (MUDP)

Project goal: Develop and demonstrate biobased binders derived from pyrolysis oils as sustainable alternatives to fossil bitumen in asphalt production.

Project timeline: 2024-2025

Approach: The project investigates how pyrolysis of agricultural and forestry residues can produce biooils and binders with similar properties to conventional bitumen. At the Danish Technological Institute, various biooil formulations are refined and tested to achieve the required viscosity, adhesion, and durability. Laboratory and pilot-scale trials assess the technical feasibility and performance of Biotumen in asphalt applications.

Expected results: By 2026 the project is expected to demonstrate that biobased binders can partially replace fossil bitumen in asphalt without compromising quality or durability of asphalt. A 50% substitution in Denmark could reduce emissions by approximately 25,000 tons of CO₂ per year and alleviate resource pressure in the asphalt industry.
